And no, I don't abuse my books.Įvery few years I sign back up with the Science Fiction Book Club so that I can stock up on their omnibus volumes to replace the paperbacks that have fallen apart.

I really do feel that if I'm going to shell out about $8, give or take, the damn thing ought to last for at least a few reads. I've bought paperbacks older than I am and had them last for at least half a dozen reads or more, but had a brand new paperback fall to pieces in my hands before I could even finish it. As someone who began reading from paperbacks bought from the Used Book Exchange, I can testify that today's paperbacks do not take the same kind of abuse as ones that were published before I was born. I prefer hardcover for books that I intend to read more than once, though of course I don't always know whether or not that is the case when I first buy one. i usually read laying down in bed, on my stomach, and either one works for me. which is all the time.įor me, it just doesn't matter whether the book is hardback or paperback. and, like Daz, i buy them in hardback if i simply can't wait. this is why i don't buy used books unless they're either hard to find or in really good shape. or when they turn the corners of the pages over (dog ear them) to mark their places. i hate people who abuse them and brake the spines. but i'm careful with them, holding them a certain way. so it doesn't matter to me if they're paperback or hardback. they take the place of the real life friends i've lost. books are the only friends i have here with me. ever since that first trip to the library, when i cried my little heart out because i couldn't check out more than five books. books have been my closest and best friends ever since i learned to read. I really have no preference one way or the other. I chose indifferent because, like Mad said, there wasn't a both option.
